What Being a Professional Photographer is Like | Kristen Driscoll Photography

.

Being a photographer is more than knowing how to properly expose an image. It’s more than knowing how to achieve that creamy bokeh in your shallow depth of field.. or what lens to use for the best compression. It is more than owning a certain camera and knowing every technical aspect about it.

.
Being a photographer is about determination – and rocking the shot. The adrenaline that coincides with knowing that you found that perfect angle, you’ve just captured the perfect candid expression.. or lined something up so precisely that it causes you to smile. It is about creativity.. and having “an eye” for the things around you, seeing things in a unique way.

.

I find myself in 75% less photos than I used to be in before I opened my photography business. I think this is because it makes me so happy to capture a memory for someone else. Joseph Campbell said “Follow your bliss..” and that is mine.

.

Two nights ago, my fiance and I went exploring for some great photo opportunities. I’m sure he was enjoying himself, but not nearly as much as I was when I found “the shot” of the night. I find myself very selective in how I take a photo, and am not satisfied until it is just how I have envisioned it.

.

So.. in summary. When photography runs through your veins as much as music runs through the veins of a songwriter with an amazing voice, belting out her inner most expressions of art through sound, does.. you will quickly learn all the technical aspects, like mentioned above and more – because you know that that is it will enable your vision to come to life and be captured forever. You will find a way to own the camera that allows your vision to become real, you will learn what you need to learn about it in order to create your vision. You will create photographs that make you smile. Because when you are so driven that the photos you create make you smile, they will make others smile too.
